Regina Farmers' Market (RFM) began like most Farmers' Markets in Saskatchewan, with an initial push from the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture in the early 1970s. The Ministry felt that Farmers' Markets set up across the province would benefit communities, give farmers the opportunity to bring local food to Saskatchewan tables, and offer another source of income for struggling farms. A man named Ralph Gordon Thomson was the first President of the RFM and the driving force behind setting up the first Regina Farmers' Market. On May 12th, 1975 the Regina Farmers' Market officially became a non-profit organization and had their first Market at the Exhibition Grounds with honey and tasty, fresh vegetables.

Things weren't easy back in those days, but RFM Members stuck it out with a small amount of vendors, strongly believing it would catch on. At times there as little as  six Members at the RFM! Within a few years the RFM grew into a good medium sized Market. A couple who were part of the original Markets were Rose and Stuart Fishley. They are the only remaining original Market Members that attend RFM today. They provide bedding plants, herbs, vegetables, wooden toys,  and wooden furniture.

The Market held various locations throughout Regina, such as the Exhibition Grounds, 1800 Hamilton Street, the Sask Power parking lot, the Via Rail Building, and then finally settled on 1900 Block Scarth Street in 1992. An organization, Regina Market Square (later to grow into Regina Downtown BID) was thrilled to have the Market in Downtown Regina. They took responsibility for the RFM's Advertising and Marketing through radio and newspapers. The Market in this location definitely had a positive impact on local businesses as it attracted crowds. A table truck was maintained for the vendors so they could set up their booths. Market Managers such as Hugh Self, Joyce Thomas, and Betty Hutton used handmade signs, worked from their cars on the street, and used their homes as the RFM offices.
